Chapter 5: Heavy Ball: The Sleeping Snorlax

Summary:

Tia tests out her modified Heavy Balls to catch a very heavy, slumbering Pokemon.

It definitely paid off to listen to off-hand comments made by strangers.

When Tia overheard a boy in the National Park talking about hearing a big Pokemon nearby, but he couldn’t get over the fence to check, it got her thinking. Half an hour later, she had found an opening in the fence big enough to squeeze through.

Now, deep in the woods outside the National Park, she was standing in front of the biggest Snorlax she had ever seen.

“Perfect,” she whispered to herself, “I can finally test out the Heavy Ball tweak I installed last week. This thing’s gotta be more than 200 pounds!”

The Snorlax yawned and turned over, scratching its stomach. Tia debated whether to wake it up and battle it before catching it, or catch it at full health while it was sleeping. Either way would yield interesting results. But somehow, Tia felt that catching it while it was sleeping was cheating.

She nodded, making her decision, and pulled out her Pokegear. She tuned it to a station she remembered always played Poke Flute melodies, and placed it close to the Snorlax.

A few moments later, Tia wondered if she’d made a mistake.

The angry Snorlax towered over her and roared.

Trembling, Tia reached for a Poke Ball and threw it. “Go, Aura!” The Poke Ball opened to reveal a shiny, black and blue Umbreon.

“Aura, use Crunch!”

The attack didn’t seem to faze the Snorlax. It reciprocated with a Body Slam.

It hit Aura, but it seemed to do little damage. Tia thanked her lucky stars that Umbreons had high Defense, and that she had the foresight to give Aura some Leftovers earlier that day.

“All right, next, use Psychic!”

This attack did a little more damage. Tia figured that Snorlax’s Defense or Special Defense had fallen.

Snorlax did another Body Slam, which missed.

“Yes!” Tia shouted, “Okay, Aura, do another Crunch!” This attack weakened the Snorlax greatly. Tia was about to throw a Heavy Ball, but stopped. Just in case…

“Aura, use False Swipe!” This attack, Tia was sure, would weaken the Snorlax enough to be caught.

The Snorlax growled, wobbling to the left and to the right, and was ready to keel over.

“All right, then,” Tia intoned, “Heavy Ball, go!”

The Heavy Ball captured the Snorlax and wobbled: once, twice, a third time… then clicked shut.

“Yeah! We did it!” Tia shouted happily, “Aura, you did great!” She walked over to the Heavy Ball and picked it up. She quickly set up her laptop and plugged a cable into the Ball to record the capture data.

Snorlax
Level 30
Gender: Male
Weight: 1014 lbs
Capture Rate: +40

Tia’s eyes widened as she saw the Pokemon’s weight. Over a thousand pounds?! Her estimation had been incredibly off. But at least she had captured a Pokemon at the high end of the Heavy Ball’s range.

She unplugged the Ball and turned it around in her hands, amazed at how a Pokemon so heavy could fit into a ball so light.
