Chapter 51: Gigaton Ball: The Art of the Back-Strike

Summary:

Tia and Aidan travel to Sinnoh to test out an ancient Poke Ball and research an ancient Pokemon legend.

“I hate to say it,” Tia said, “but you have be a freaking ninja to use these things!” She scowled at the Gigaton Ball in her hand, then scowled at the giant Ursaring loafing around in the distance. “Or at least versed in some form of guerrilla warfare. Hit-and-run. Whatever. How do we even get close to that thing?”

“Hey, it was your idea to use these Balls to catch it,” Aidan retorted, “I just wanted to see if the Alpha Pokemon legend was true. Judging from the size of that Ursaring, it definitely is. And another thing,” he continued, “I thought you were done with your research. Why are you still testing out Poke Balls?”

Tia sighed. “It’s for a new project I’m hoping to spearhead. And hopefully something that’ll help finish the Pokedex for Professor Oak.”

She looked back at the Ursaring in the distance, gripped the Gigaton Ball, and let out a deep breath.

“All right. Here we go again.”

“Be careful,” Aidan said.

“Always.” She turned and crouched in the tall grass, heading back to the Ursaring.

When she got close enough to hear it breathe, she waited until it turned its back, and threw the Gigaton Ball. The Ball missed the Ursaring by a hair, flying past it with a “whoosh.” The Ursaring looked around wildly, as Tia remained crouched in the tall grass, holding her breath.

The Ursaring stopped looking around and continued walking around aimlessly. Tia let out a deep breath, then pulled out another Gigaton Ball. She crept slowly through the tall grass, and taking a chance, tiptoed away from the grass patch, following the Ursaring’s movements.

When she got close enough to see the details in the Ursaring’s fur, she threw the Gigaton Ball. The Gigaton Ball hit the Ursaring square in the back, and it disappeared inside. As it wobbled, Tia quickly had an idea and pulled out a sticky green glob from her pack.

The Gigaton Ball broke open, and the Ursaring reappeared, very, very angry. Tia gulped, and before the Ursaring could do anything, she quickly threw the sticky glob at it, hoping something would happen. The glob hit the Ursaring in the face, and it stumbled, holding its head and acting stunned.

Tia stared at it for a moment, amazed, then pulled out another Gigaton Ball and threw it at the Ursaring’s back. The Ursaring disappeared into the Ball, and Tia watched as it wobbled. After a moment of waiting, a flash of steam and a firework erupted from the hole at the top. Captured.

Tia sighed in relief, and gave a thumbs-up sign to Aidan, who was waving at her from their research station.

“I can’t believe that Sticky Glob recipe worked,” Tia said, putting the Gigaton Ball down and wiping her hands off with a washcloth. “The Ginkgo Gadgets guys were right when they said it’d come in handy.”

“And now we have a living example of the Alpha Pokemon the Hisuian legends talked about,” Aidan replied, picking up the Gigaton Ball. “At least, I think we do. We just need to get this guy measured up…”

He handed the Ball back to Tia, and she removed a small sensor that had been attached to it. She plugged the Poke Ball cable into this sensor, typed a few commands into her laptop, and waited for the capture data to appear.

Ursaring

Gender: Male
Capture Rate: 2.74

Tia smiled. “Looks like the new Capture Sensors are working beautifully.” They had been specially developed to track capture data for the ancient Tumblestone-based Poke Balls which didn’t have a digital interface.

“When I asked if you wanted to spend a holiday weekend in Sinnoh,” Aidan said, “I didn’t think we’d spend it doing work!”

“Hey, you got to chase down a legend, and I got to test out an ancient Poke Ball!” Tia said cheerfully. “Two birds with one stone!”

“After this, can we do some sightseeing and touristy stuff like normal people do?” Aidan asked, smirking.

Tia smiled. “If you want.”
