Chapter 20: Rocket

Summary:

Tia's memories of Team Rocket's takeover of Silph, Co.

Tia peered around a corner and looked around. Everything was quiet. The halls of Silph, Co., usually full of researchers walking to and from meeting rooms, were devoid of people. Naito hopped out and tweeted softly. Tia picked him up and covered his mouth. “Shh!” Naito quieted down and hopped onto Tia’s shoulder.

Tia suddenly heard footsteps coming down the hall, and she and Naito hurriedly hid behind a fake plant. A man dressed in a black Team Rocket uniform walked past, aimlessly tossing a Poke Ball in the air.

It was just her luck that Team Rocket had invaded Silph on the company’s annual “Bring Your Child to Work” day. Her parents, along with the other researchers, were trapped inside the main boardroom, and Tia was going to get them out if it was the last thing she did.

As long as she didn’t get caught first.

The Rocket walked by without noticing Tia, and she and Naito slowly crept away from their hiding place. Tia ran down the hall silently, turned the corner, and slammed right into someone else, falling to the floor.

She got up quickly, getting ready to run, when the other person spoke up.

“Tia?”

Tia looked up. “Kit?” Sure enough, it was her Trainer friend. “What are you doing here? This place is crawling with Rocket Grunts!”

“I’m trying to get rid of them!” Kit answered, seriously.

“All by yourself?”

Kit sighed. “Terry and Mira are around here somewhere. Of course, Terry’s made it into a competition, to see who gets rid of the most Rockets. That idiot. I’m just concerned about the people trapped here, and getting to the Rocket leader.”

Tia thought a moment. “He might be in the President’s office, on the top floor. If we get into the main boardroom on the fifth floor, there’s a set of teleporters that’ll take you straight there!”

Kit nodded. “Let’s go, then!”

After a bit more sneaking around and defeating Rocket Grunts and rogue Scientists – those traitors! – Tia and Kit finally reached the boardroom and unlocked it, freeing the researchers and personnel inside. Tia showed Kit the teleporter.

“Keep following these, and you’ll end up on the top floor,” Tia told her, “Don’t worry about the rest of us here, we’ll be fine!”

Kit smiled. “Thanks!”

“Be careful, and go get ‘em!” Tia said encouragingly.

When it was all over, Tia heard that Team Rocket had ultimately been driven off with the help of three traveling Trainers – the Rocket leader in particular had finally retreated after being defeated in battle by a young girl. Tia wished she could have seen the battle – it must have been amazing.

Kit had stuck around for a day or two to visit Tia and her family, and had taken a picture with them right before leaving for the next town. It was this picture that, years later, was placed in the display case of an exhibit on the first floor of the Silph, Co. building, chronicling the Rockets’ takeover and defeat.

Tia stared at the picture fondly, remembering those days, then walked away. It was time to get going.
