Fun and Games and Flamboyance

Summary:

Weyrling Kaiya boosts midnight-blue Danath's ego through a game of Frisbee.

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Danath eyed the silver disc carefully as it glided through the air. He waited for a second, making sure everyone was watching, then chased after it at his top speed. He then sprang up and deftly caught the disc in his mouth, all his movements perfectly calculated so that the sunlight glinted across his brilliant midnight-blue hide and made it sparkle.

Kaiya let out a cheer. “That’s it, Danath! Good job!”

Danath strutted back to her with his head held high, looking from the corners of his eyes at the small crowd of weyrlings and dragonets that had formed around him and Kaiya. He dropped the disc into Kaiya’s hands.

Again, again! Danath said, his eyes whirling with excitement.

Kaiya smiled, knowing he wanted to show off more of his speed and strength. “All right,” she said, “here we go!” She threw the disc again and watched as Danath launched after it, making a delicate twirl as he jumped to catch it.

A couple of weyrlings cheered and applauded, making Danath beam with delight as he trotted back to Kaiya.

Tr’silo turned to Kaiya with a smile. “I didn’t think Danath would take to Frisbee so well,” he said, “Ishkinth loves it, and Kettymath and Deimoth like it to some extent, but the other dragonets… not so much.”

“Anything that lets Danath show off his looks and abilities, he’ll do it!” Kaiya said proudly.

“Nice one, Kaiya,” a condescending voice rang out, “Do you have a dragon or a dancing shipfish?”

Kaiya looked across the grounds and glared at Thippia. Then, with a devious smile, she threw the Frisbee directly toward Thippia. “Go, Danath!” she sang out.

Thippia let out a frightened shriek as Danath barreled toward her and she scrambled out of the way.

How rude! Danath rumbled as he walked back to Kaiya, Frisbee in mouth. How dare she run away from my magnificence!

“It just shows not everyone is worthy,” Kaiya replied, stroking Danath’s head. She twirled the Frisbee in her hand. “Another go?”

Danath reared back and flapped his wings. Of course! Our audience awaits!

Kaiya laughed and sent the Frisbee flying with a sweep of her hand.

Notes:

Here's another Dragonchoice + Frisbee piece! As some readers might notice, Kaiya is the main rider character in my series Sunrays and Turquoise Days, Impressed to sea-green Mabonth. This piece is a what-if AU, in which Kaiya became a Lady Blue rider and impressed the flamboyant midnight-blue Danath instead. Their relationship plays out slightly differently, of course, and exploring it, even just a little bit, is pretty interesting!
