The Evolution of the Otaku Room

These are a series of illustrations from a Japanese Newtype magazine in 2010, chronicling the evolution of an anime fan's room from 1985 to "now" (2010). The article that originally discussed these pictures has been deleted, but I managed to save the images. (The article itself can be viewed on the Wayback Machine here).

What I notice most is the decline in giant robot representation in the room as the years go by, the increase in cute girls, and the gradual reduction of physical media for both anime and music. Somehow I find it all a bit distressing...

Two more rooms are featured in the article:

A normal girl's (Otome's) room:

An otaku girl's (Fujoshi's) room:

I think I identify more with the male otaku rooms than the female ones, especially the room from 1995! I still prefer physical media for most anime and manga and music, though I've had to switch to streaming and eBooks recently, out of necessity, due to lack of space. It's so frustrating!

I wonder what otaku rooms will look like in the next 10 or 20 years? Something interesting to think about!
