100 Webmaster Questions!
I found this on Solaria's Webspace and thought it'd be fun to answer these questions! It's a long list, and I don't know if anyone will actually read this, but here we GO!
(The template for these questions can be found here.)
- 1. Please introduce yourself.
- I'm yukimayari. Also known as Mayari, Yukima, and Gracious Lullaby (only by my mom and grandpa!)
- 2. How long have you been making websites?
- Since May 2025!
- 3. And what got you into the hobby?
- I write fanfiction with original characters, and was inspired by all the personal websites I found featuring stories with OCs when I found Neocities, so I decided to create my own website for my most popular (I guess?) fanfic! This eventually led to me creating my own personal website featuring a bit of everything.
- 4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
- Personal websites with nice art and design, with resources to help others do the same thing!
- 5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
- Mostly as I go along. I fit my vision for my website around the resources I find, and add enough spice to make it my own!
- 6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
- Websites like Doqmeat.com and PetraPixel, definitely. These two websites inspired most of the new code I learned while making this website!
- 7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
- Making layouts that look great, and writing about things I like! And documenting the crazy projects I end up doing!
- 8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
- Staying consistent with updates, due to shifting and cycling interests.
- 9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
- Mostly. For pages that showcase my writing, I use a modified template that removes the sidebars and allows the writing to "breathe." For my fanfiction, I specifically use a template by BlazingCobaltX that mimics the Archive of Our Own (AO3) layout!
- 10. How confident are you with CSS?
- Ok, kinda. I use stylesheets for styling my layout, and inline CSS for any one-off design choices!
- 11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
- Uh... I never encountered it until this questionnaire!
- 12. What is your favourite HTML element?
- Ahahaha... unnumbered lists. I drove myself nuts learning how to make nested dropdown lists, now I can't ever forget how to do them!
- 13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
- Make sure the stylesheet is set up first! I don't like seeing too many broken things on a webpage!
- 14. Do you know JavaScript?
- Eww. I only use it when I have to, and it's all brainless copy and paste!
- 15. How about PHP?
- *maniacal laughter* Nope.
- 16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
- Not... really. Design-wise, yes, I like the blue-green/teal with purple/pink! Content-wise, it's all over the place, with writing and anime as the core!
- 17. Are you more focused on content or design?
- Both!
- 18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
- I don't, and I probably wouldn't want to because that would probably cost a fee I don't want to pay!
- 19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
- I love them! I loved exploring personal websites back in the days when corporations didn't own everything!
- 20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
- Eh. If the page looks good (ie. not broken), then it's good. I don't really go back and check!
- 21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
- I love them! So much cute art and sprites and blinky things!
- 22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
- They're a fun way to show off links to cool websites you find in your travels!
- 23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
- Probably something similar. I don't have the mental bandwith to make something completely different, unless it's specifically showcasing something I wrote!
- 24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
- A little. But that's what the View Source option is for, to see just how the webmasters pulled off this or that effect!
- 25. What text editor do you use?
- I type everything out directly into the Neocities web editor! (Living dangerously, aren't we?) Definitely something I wouldn't dare do on sites like AO3...
- 26. Why do you use that one?
- I'm too lazy to use another editor and have to copy and paste everything.
- 27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
- The Supporter tier on Neocities gives you 50GB of space, which is more than enough for all my images! No need for another host!
- 28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
- Don't care. I find both providers very similar, though I find more sites on Neocities than Nekoweb.
- 29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
- Around 1 GB, surprisingly. I'm not sure yet what's taking up all that space, other than a handful of MP3 files. Maybe uncompressed images?
- 30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
- Yep. You never know when your provider will crash and burn!
- 31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
- Both!
- 32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
- Blue/Teal, to purple, to pink. With an emphasis on the blue-green side of the spectrum. Most personal websites I see are overloaded with pink, so I decided to go in the other direction for my website! Also, blue-green/teal/turquoise is my favorite color, along with purple/violet and pink!
- 33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
- No. I never quit a hobby. I may lose interest and move on to something else, but I always cycle back!
- 34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
- Mostly solitary. I don't mind, though. The site is mostly (specifically) for me, and anyone else who likes it is a nice bonus!
- 35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
- My immediate family, and that's it.
- 36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
- When I'm hyperfocusing, "very often" is once every minute or two, especially when I'm trying to fix a problem! When not hyperfocusing, I update maybe once or twice every couple of days or weeks.
- 37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
- Nope, no real changes. I like it when everything matches!
- 38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
- Me and my hobbies. I hear more than enough depressing things about the outside world, and I'd rather it not bleed into my fun time!
- 39. Do you do web design professionally?
- Nope!
- 40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
- No, not really. I do this for fun, and work is... decidedly not fun. I make plastic for a living, and it's just brainless enough that I can think of and do other more interesting things while I work!
- 41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
- No. I prefer real-time chat like Discord, and forum posts and comments!
- 42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
- I have Facebook and Instagram solely to keep track of relatives and IRL friends, and Twitter/X and Tumblr for those rare, outlier content creators I follow who only use them. Reddit is my main outlet, mostly for the non-unhinged anime/game subreddits.
- 43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
- I use Discord. Sometimes it's nice to be part of certain fandom servers that cater to interests that the main fandom subreddits don't really care about (ie. fanfiction and fanworks in general that aren't fanart)
- 44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
- Sometimes I do. Mostly fanmix playlists I put together on Spotify!
- 45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
- I have my main website, and one smaller website dedicated to my first fanfiction: Digimon Infinity.
- 46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
- Many, many topics! I have multiple hobbies and interests, and I want to cover them all!
- 47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
- My real self. I don't have the mental energy to create a persona!
- 48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
- Not yet.
- 49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
- Ehh... There are some things I'd like to do with coding that HTML and CSS don't do easily or not at all. They mostly work, but they could be better!
- 50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
- Autoplay. I'll watch that video or listen to that song when I want to, thank you very much!
- 51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
- If you're using a template, please do something unique with it, that makes it your own. I'm tired of seeing cookie-cutter websites that don't even bother to change the colors or fonts or even IMAGES used in the template, and I can identify what they used from a mile away!
- 52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
- Generic structure, I guess? To an extent. No need to reinvent the wheel, or fix what isn't broken, after all!
- 53. Do you consider different browsers?
- Not... really. I use Chrome both on desktop and mobile, and never really think to test my website on other browsers!
- 54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
- I just use Chrome out of convenience. If it suddenly started being annoying, I'd easily switch to another browser.
- 55. And what OS are you on?
- Windows 11, out of convenience/necessity.
- 56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
- If Apple and MacOS didn't become so annoying in recent years, I would have stayed with Macs.
- 57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
- Yes! I easily spend half my online time on my phone, so I make sure my websites look right on mobile!
- 58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
- NO. Get that crap outta here!
- 59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
- A cool relic of the old internet. I've joined one so far, maybe I'll join more in the future!
- 60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
- I guess you could consider my various hobby pages to be shrines. I look for nice images and cool content to download!
- 61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
- What even is "cliche" on the indie web? There are so many different ways to express yourself on a website!
- 62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
- I don't have an ideal. I just let my website grow organically!
- 63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
- Not much of an artist in terms of original content or website assets, but I am a Photoshop hotshot, and a fan of shameless recoloring and repurposing! With my own hands and heart, mind you. No AI here!
- 64. What are your favourite resource sites?
- Doqmeat.com, PetraPixel, hill house, Solaria's Webspace, and Sadgrl.online.
- 65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
- Copypasting all my code, including HTML tags, because I'm too lazy to type it all out and too principled to get a website builder or AI to do it for me.
- 66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
- Start small and simple, and take it slow. Don't try to build your dream website right away. And find ways to simplify your layout code down to an easy copypaste!
- 67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
- The general, repetitive stuff I keep in the stylesheet, and the one-offs for specific pages I use inline CSS for.
- 68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
- I always thought frames were annoying. I still do.
- 69. How about table-based layouts?
- I guess they're okay? I don't use them very much, only for specific pages.
- 70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
- Yes. They are lifesavers! My sites use three columns - the middle "main content" column, and two sidebars.
- 71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
- Equal time on both.
- 72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
- Yes, for a page featuring a web music player with so much CSS in its code that it kept breaking the page if I included the stylesheet!
- 73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
- Only when the need arises. I don't like seeing pages that aren't used.
- 74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
- Maybe mid-beginner? There's still a lot I don't know, and I learn new stuff every day!
- 75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
- Lawl. Yes. How else am I supposed to know how the webmaster worked their magic?
- 76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
- From a computer applications class in middle school, circa 1999. I learned basic HTML and actually built my own website back then, coding by hand at first then using Microsoft FrontPage. But it didn't last, and I lost interest, and that original website is now lost to time. I don't even remember what I named it.
- 77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
- Not knowingly. I usually start off doing things the hard way, until someone points out, "You know, there's an easier way to do that." Story of my life.
- 78. Thoughts on floating elements?
- I don't do this much. I probably should, though.
- 79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
- For images, I use % width, so they always size relative to the web browser's viewing resolution. For my website banner, I used px to determine image height when working on the mobile responsiveness.
- 80. Do you have a favourite font?
- Nunito, for normal text. Gaegu, for handwritten text.
- 81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
- I probably wouldn't. My websites are so personal to me, I wouldn't feel comfortable sharing control of them.
- 82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
- I do, whenever I'm bored.
- 83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
- For Neocities websites, I use the Follow function. For others, I do bookmark! If someone else bookmarked my site, I would feel so honored that they liked my site enough to come back!
- 84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
- Nothing really. This is for me, and if other people like it, then good. If they don't, they don't.
- 85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
- I LOVE working with and handling old, obsolete physical media! VHS, Laserdisc, cassette tapes, vinyl, and more! I love the art, and the effort put in to make the packaging look great, and the act of putting the media into the player and pressing Play. And since it's physical media, I get to keep it forever! I collect a disturbingly large amount of old anime, cartoons, soundtracks, and video games in a wide variety of formats.
- 86. How often and for how long are you online?
- More often than I really should. I keep needing to remind myself to touch grass every once in a while!
- 87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
- Me!
- 88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
- Err... no.
- 89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
- Not really. I did learn basic C in college, but it never stuck because it was so boring.
- 90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
- I've never used one. I'm sure they're helpful, but I'm not quite sick enough of copypasting code yet to consider using one!
- 91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
- Yep. I like to know what traffic my humble website gets, even if it's small!
- 92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
- Reddit, mostly. and Laserdisc Database (LDDB).
- 93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
- Directly into the editor! Live dangerously!
- 94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
- Eh... I don't know. Maybe they do, and I'm not aware of it. I don't care!
- 95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
- I'm proud of everything I've worked on, even the old, cringy stuff! The only time I deleted something was out of rage, and I wasn't in a good place mentally back then. I'm better now, thankfully!
- 96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
- I'll never close my website down! It'll stay online until the world ends or Neocities croaks - whichever comes first!
- 97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
- Just enough for people to get a good idea of how my mind works, and nothing that would get me doxxed!
- 98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
- I don't really have online friends, just acquaintances.
- 99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
- No...? Maybe I should?
- 100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
- IN THE ZONE!! My ADHD brain is energized and ready to write MOAR!! Oh, wait... it's over already? Well, darn!
